Infraction Types
Name Description Points
Redacted Content The content has been removed from view for undisclosed reasons. This infraction is not really an infraction at all, and is only used when we must hide otherwise acceptable content for legal, ethical, or other reasons. 0
Copyright infringement Posted content contains copyrighted material and the poster does not have a license for distribution, or the post encourages or provides access in some way to pirated material. Note that it is considered copyright infringement to quote extensively from a published work, including articles published online. Please provide a link to such works rather than a quote. 1
Cross-posting Posting the same content in multiple posts. Note that since this is often done by mistake, the moderators should normally take other actions rather than issue a warning. Depending on the circumstance, they may choose to merge cross-posted threads, send cross-posted threads to the Bit Bucket, or take no action. 1
Excessive Advertising (Over-competition) Vendors may freely respond to any questions that are asked, but are prohibited from heavy participation in competitor's threads and may not seek to detour discussions toward their own products. 1
Excessive Advertising (Spam) We allow one advertisement per week per forum per user. An advertisement is any content designed to sell or publicize an event, good, or service. Note that certain areas of the site (including the classifieds and vendor sections) are exempt from this rule. 1
Off Topic Advertisement The post contains an advertisement that is not appropriate given the forum's topic. 1
Offensive Content (Violent) The post contains content which conveys a threat or depicts an injury in a graphic manner. 1
Offensive content (Flatulence) Flatulence is when a user brings up a controversial off-topic issue (e.g. religion, politics, moderation issues) within the course of an on-topic discussion. Please keep all content in its proper place at Crackroll. 1
Offensive content (Nudity) The post contains content that portrays an area of the body normally covered by a bikini. 1
Offensive content (Offsite link) The post contains a link to content considered offensive at Crackroll. 1
Offensive content (Personal info) The post contains an email address, phone number, street address, or other private information about another individual. We do not allow the posting of this information because once it is indexed by the search engines it may cause a person annoyances in the form of spam, telemarketing calls, etc. Note that it is acceptable to provide the public with a user's real name and general locale (e.g. "someuser is really Joe Smith from Chicago"). 1
Offensive content (Profanity) The post contains language presumed to be considered offensive by a majority of our users, or the poster has deliberately circumvented the swear word filter by misspelling a word, substituting certain characters, or crafting an abbreviation. If the offending word can be determined by context then this warning can apply. The sole exception to the abbreviation clause is "BS," which is deemed acceptable in abbreviated form only, and only in the context of "falseness." 1
Offensive content (Racism) The post contains a judgment of the intelligence, character, or appearance of a race of people, supports a position of superiority of one race over another, or contains humor or other text which would reasonably be considered offensive by a member of a given race. 1
Offensive content (Substance abuse) The post depicts or endorses the use or abuse of mind-altering drugs or the abuse of alcohol. 1
Offensive content (Suggestive) The post contains sexually suggestive material or offensive gestures. 1
Over-bumping The post does not contain relevant information and was made purely to keep the poster's thread near the top of the thread listing. We allow two bumps per thread. 1
Personal Attack The author has attacked another user's intelligence, character, or appearance. 1
Trolling (Group attack) The post contains an attack against the intelligence, character, or appearance of a group of users. 1
Trolling (Obnoxious behavior) The post is designed to annoy other users, inflate the post count of the author, describe or recommend an illegal or recklessly dangerous activity, or give advice that, if followed, would cause obvious harm. 1
Trolling (Provocation) The post contains content which is designed to elicit an emotional response from other users. 1
Unapproved contest Raffles and wagering are strictly prohibited at Crackroll. Contests where items of real value may be awarded may be run by site sponsors no more than once every 30 days. Non-sponsors may run contests only if the item has no real value, or if special permission is received from the forum moderator or site administrators. 1
User Account Violation (Avatar) The user's avatar qualifies as offensive content or includes an advertisement for a non-sponsor. 1
User Account Violation (Custom User Title) The user's Custom User Title qualifies as offensive content or contains an ad for a non-sponsor. 1
User Account Violation (Malicious Trader Rating) The user has left a Trader Rating that is designed to unfairly damage the reputation of another user. 1
User Account Violation (Profile Field) One of the user's profile fields contains offensive content. 1
User Account Violation (User id) The user's id qualifies as offensive content. 1
Trolling (Obnoxious Reporting) The user has abused the reporting system by repeatedly requesting moderator intervention when none is required. 3
Trolling (Widespread) Posting obnoxiously in multiple forums or threads with the intention of distracting the user-base and annoying moderators. 3
Highly Offensive Content (Immediate ban) The posted material is considered so offensive that the user must be immediately banned. 10
User Trolling/Spamming Immediate ban for trolling or spamming. 10
Troll or Spam Account Immediate ban for being a troll, robot, or spam poster. 40

About our Infraction System

Crackroll moderates online discussions using a sophisticated, highly customized infraction system.

Infraction Levels

When a user is assessed an infraction, his "infraction level" increases according to the point value of the issued infraction. Infractions "age" and are removed from a user's infraction level after a period of time elapses.

Bans

Users are automatically subjected to a 5 day ban when their infraction level reaches 10 points. If a banned user causes further trouble upon his return, his punishment is stepped up until ultimately he may be subject to a permanent ban.

Note that the Life, the Universe, and Politics forum has a special rule. Users with more than 5 infraction points may not post in this forum. This is due to the special, often volatile discussions in this forum.

The Administrators sometimes make exceptions to the usual automated banning system if the account in question is clearly a "spam" or "troll" account. This is a judgment call based on the user's post count and the content of the posts that have been made.

Notification

A user who is warned or alerted through our system will receive a private message indicating the reason for the infraction. A link to the warned post, if applicable, will be provided in the private message.

Appeals

Users may appeal their infractions by posting a thread in the Site Suggestions / Complaints forum. Note that while the administrators have access to the entire Crackroll database, they are limited in the time they have to sift through it. They may also be unwilling or unable to disclose some of the information contained within it. Therefore, we have limited the types of appeals that may be made.

Types of Appeals

There are two forms of appeals accepted by the administrators.

The first is an appeal of an infraction. To make this sort of appeal, provide a link to the warned content as well as an explanation of why you feel this content does not break the rule.

The second is an escalated report. Use this appeal if the moderators failed to act on a report. To make this sort of appeal, provide a link to the content. Include what rule you believe the content violates and why you believe it should be warned in the appeal.

How to Better Your Odds

The administrators are well aware that most users try to conduct themselves in a proper manner, and that moderators occasionally make mistakes. That's why the appeals process was created. We want you to use it if we've goofed!

However, it's also true that there are all sorts of people on the internet. For whatever reason, some people find it very difficult to accept criticism, to see beyond their own perception, or to allow others to make mistakes. Such people will abuse any conceivable system, because they will always believe it to be biased against them.

Also, even very well adjusted people sometimes feel overwhelmed when they are criticized. It feels bad to know that you've been accused of something. The tendency to respond in a defensive manner is natural. It may help to know that we don't think you are "bad" if you received an infraction notice.

Therefore, simply stick to the facts. The administrators have had much more experience with this sort of thing than you have, and will respond curtly to sarcasm, accusations, and wild claims; stay on subject. They are only interested in specific details regarding the appeal.

Hidden Posts

Certain infraction types (such as offensive content or copyright infringement) cause the post to be hidden from view. When hidden, a post may only be seen by a moderator or administrator. Posts warned for other reasons will be collapsed in the thread view and visible to regular users by an additional mouse click.

How to Avoid Getting Warned

The vast majority of infractions are issued for personal attacks or foul language.

Personal attacks usually come up during arguments. Some people have a hard time expressing themselves without attacking others and it is fairly common to see "personal attack" infractions handed out. Please remember that Crackroll believes strongly in protecting the dignity of its users and a confrontational debate style is not welcome here.

Foul language is more than just the classic list of "swear words." Users often try to circumvent our "swear word filter" by substituting asterisks for certain letters, or by deliberately misspelling words. Please keep in mind that our site has a firm "family friendly" policy that has served us well since our founding in 1996. Crackroll censors language, text, videos, links, and other media that could potentially cause the site to be blocked by a school, library, or church. This policy is designed to make Crackroll accessible to the widest possible audience.

You are Responsible for Yourself

At Crackroll each user is responsible for their own posts. It is not possible, therefore, to successfully argue an appeal on the basis of what other users did prior to the action that was warned. Quoting an offensive word originally typed up by someone else will still result in an "Offensive Content" infraction. Likewise, responding to a personal attack with a personal attack is not acceptable.

How to Report a Rule Violation

Each post at Crackroll has a "Report This Post to a Moderator" link. Simply click on that link to report a violation of the rules. If you report a post and do not see any action within a reasonable period of time, you can escalate the issue by posting a thread in Site Suggestions / Complaints.

Please note that while we allow all users to see the Recent Infractions, appeals are best made by the user who was warned. If you witness a violation of the law, suspicious behavior, theft, the threat of physical violence, or other illegal activity, please contact the authorities in your area. If you do so, law enforcement will typically contact RCGroups.com, LLC. We're glad to assist them.
