I know theres the exhaust issue.. but theres gotta be a way around that..
longer flight times/more power, whats the drawback besides exhaust?

I used this last year, notice the exhaust extention... It still covered the mount and gear with oily fuel residue, really depends on which way the wind is blowing and do not fly backwards. A front mount would be more successful but you'll still have to watch for nitro smoke in the photos.

how does an extention like that effect the efficiency of your motor? any noticable loss in power?
what was that extension made of?

and one more question..
is there a "cleaner" solution to ap helis for longer run time without going electric?

It was made from two used venture 30 aluminum tailbooms, one end flared and the other one slide in. It did not affect the engine, a rubber deflector is simply angled up into the tube and it is not sealed around it. Any heavy fuel would just drip out that section while all the smoke exited the back.

I don't know of any alternatives besides different brands of fuel. 15% seems to smoke less.

It really all comes down to the type of fuel. 15% does smoke less and if you're just doing AP with the heli, then there is no need for any higher % of nitro. More importantly is the brand of fuel. Some brands will hardly smoke at all while others smoke way more than they should.

Do you know which fuels smoke less?

I forget which brands of glow fuel have the least amount of smoke.
The best way to go is with a gasoline heli because you mix the oil into the gas yourself and if you mix it at 40:1 with an ash-less oil, there pretty much isn't any smoke at all. That and the flight times are longer and the payload is higher!

Coolpower makes a LS(low smoke) version of their heli fuel. I still have a gallon of it.

And it does smoke a little less. But still tastes the same. :)

What do you mean by that?

I once had glow-fuel back fire out of a flooded carb right into my mouth. The taste was probably as bad as stories I've heard about gasoline getting in someones mouth.

It was a joke. Glow fuel is very very toxic. I, too, have gotten it in my mouth by mistake. I"ve also gotten a mouthful of gasoline before.......gas tastes better than glow. ;)

lol I can imagine..
Of course I'd LOVE to get a gasser, but the price is just out of reach. Until I start selling pics at $150 per, I'm pretty sure it wont be happening.

can you lower the level of nitro by mixing fuels? .. i don't know what nitro fuel consists of besides.. well.. nitro.

Model engine Glow Fuel is really Methanol AKA Methyl Alcohol with a % of Nitromethane in it as well as an engine lubricating oil pre-mixed in. There are some variations of how much of what they mix together between 4-stroke fuel, heli fuel, airplane fuel, and car fuel.
