Hey guys. I guess I'll start things off here in the Audacity wing of Crackroll.com.
My Pantera is coming along nicely. I was fortunate to get mine new, unflown used (does that make sence?) It has been assembled per the book by the previous owner, but like any diligent heli guy getting a used machine, I did some disassembly, check, lube reassemble work on the head. I made sure the thrust bearings were greased (they were) and made sure the links were all on in the correct direction.
My "builder" did a great job on the assembly. Thanks George!
I got a good deal on a Hyper 50 and found a dial indicator on e-Bay for $4+shipping. I got the fan dialed in to about .003" and mounted the engine to the airframe. In the process I snapped the head off of one mount screw. Did you know that M3 Socket Head Cap Screws are nearly impossible to find on the economy, except at a hobby shop (but our LHS closed down a few months ago). Anyway, Parts are easy to get from John Beech (Owner, GM and Janitor of Audacity Models).
My electronics set up goes something like this:
3x Hitec 5625 on CCPM
Hitec HS635HB on throttle
Futaba Gy401/9254 gyro/servo combo
Fromeco 2600 mAh Li-Ion feeding the stuff through a Fromeco Arizona regulator.
I'm going with Audacity 600MM woodies for now, setting up and basic training. (I consider myself an advanced beginner heli pilot. Hovering and slow forward flight) I'll be moving to SWB Composite blades later on. Audacity has great prices on Composite and Carbon blades. Check 'em out. John Beech also spearheadded the movement for dual color blades (their composite and carbons are white (composite) or black (carbons) on the top, and bright pink on the bottom) for situational awareness. Many blade manufaturers have take to this practice too.
The Pantera is a great, robust machine with easy to understand build instructions and a well thought out lay-out. It is not a full carbon fiber high $$$ machine, but a expertly engineereed helicopter made from black "engineering" plastic that will flex and return to shape, where CF will break.
If you are looking for a great 50 size machine, give Audacity a look. Alos, if you are looking for a new electic 450 size hot rod, John has one in the works...stay tuned!
See ya!
