I fly one from the moment they were released.
I hope there will be a subforum for MSH over here in the near future.
It's the best performing heli with 425 blades out there Imho, and Not just because i own one :D...

Sounds quiet with that single belt setup. What batteries do you run in it?
EricW

I run Flightpower Evo25 6S1 2500 Mah on a 15T (one-way)pinion.
Rest of my setup:
- Stock Protos 500 with Standard brushless and SAB 425 CF Blades.
- Spektrum AR6200 Rx
- Kontronik Jazz 80 governored at 75-80% (modified with two BEC feeds)
- 3x JR DS3405 MG (sold in EU only) on the swash.
- Spartan DS760 with a JR3500G
- AUW 1550 gram
The easy to adjust beltdrive system works great so far, very direct and smooth.
And the performance is like nothing else, in it's own league imho.

Is that right a one-way pinion?

OK interesting design. The main gear is belt driven oneway is on the pinion. I found the manual..

Is that right a one-way pinion?
Yup! I run my Protos with the Kontronics Kora 15-12 on 5s and an 18 tooth pinion and it has monster power. The Motor, ESC, and battery all come down cool.....so cool that I put my lips on the motor after a flight to freak out my friends at the field :D Here is my setup:
Kora 15-12
Jazz 80-6-18 ESC (using the internal BEC)
Ino-Labs 251 MG servos on cyclic
Ino-Labs 261 on tail
GY401
AR 6200 rx
TP 5s 3300 lipos
CF Tail/ Horizontal fin upgrade
Stock SAB CF Blades

Hey laughingstill, good to see you here =)
I just bought a Protos not too long ago from www.freedom-rc.com and I'm pretty impressed. The Protos has actually been out for a few months now and had a really successful launch, hence my purchase. I was watching the RCG forums for all the details for awhile before I made my purchase.
The maker, MSH, (or MS Heli) makes the popular Gorilla Gear for other helicopters, and the Protos comes with Gorilla Gear standard.
This thing has a LOT of power, much more than I'm able to use at the moment, but I'm working on it. I've had to tone down the collective because there is just so much pitch available in the head that it's a little too much for me as of yet.
One thing I noticed is that FFF is FAST, really fast, like a little jet. It can get away from you if you're not careful.
I've heard the RC Helicopter did a review on it, but I haven't seen the details.
MSH definitely needs its own forum here...

So is the Protos about the same size as a Trex 500? Awesome looking heli? Love the canopy.
EricW
09-01-2008, 10:42 AM
It is the same size as a T-rex 500.
Uses the same blade size, and electronics.
It's about 300 grams lighter though.
Lipo's 5S or 6S for balistic performance, but it also flies great with 7S A123.

I'm thinking of getting a Protos as my second "real" heli. I have a Trex 450 SE V2 now. How does the Protos compare to the Trex 500? Would doubling up on my Trex packs( 3s 2200) be a good choice for the Protos?
DaySpeed

I also have a Trex 450 SE V2, looking at the Protos since the beginning on RCG.
I wonder if 8S A123 would be more of a handicap for sport flying, if there is a motor for that setup.

I don't know if you could fit 8S A123 under the canopy. 7S can be done, and two LiPo 3S 2100-2500 packs fit as well.

Are the 3k tailblades CF or a composite? Anyone know of some good CF tailblades for the Protos?
EricW
10-23-2008, 12:12 PM
Afaik 3K is a composite.
They are just as stiff as Carbon blades though, but much cheaper.
I'm not sure if there are carbon tailblades of that size with a 4mm root..

Finally a brake in the weather, only moderate wind & no rain.
Flew three flights with Protos, Eagletree logger onboard.
Setup is 7S A123 + 15t pinion.
Any comments on logs?
Has anyone logged 7S A123 and 16t pinion flight?

I have been doing a lot of looking, sniffing, and reading (not necessarily in that order) about the Protos. I think that is going to be ny next heli, possibly around the summertime 2009.
I have a brand-new set of Futaba S3151 digi servos - would they be OK in this bird?
EricW
11-07-2008, 12:55 PM
The S3151 are full size i believe broggyr...I'm afraid they won't fit on a Protos
Here is a list with compatible servos:

Hope this helps.

Oh wow, I thought that the 500 would take a full-size -- shows you what I know... :) Maybe I'd be better off selling them, because I doubt that I'll need full-size servos for a long time...

I am back to the Protos...
Let me explain: I have been doing a lot of pre-purchase research into different helis; electric, nitro, 500, 600, .50, .90, etc. I was looking at all options, trying to figure out what would be best for me. After all is said & done, I am starting to look at the Protos again.
THIS is the insanity part of the hobby. What to choose, what to buy, what to look at...:nothappy:

Hitecs digital Mgs are a great cyclic servo for the protos. I use a spartan and a upgraded 9650 on mine atm.
Cant believe there is no MSH sub forum.. I am pretty sure a full size servo will fit in the protos, but it is overkill and probably kills the weight advantage of this bird.

If you do not own a heli, this would be a great pick to start with.
Like buying your first car, and come home with a Ferrari ;)
It can take your flying level from "0" to the level you can possibly reach, the Protos will not be in the way IMO.
