I'm looking forward to a positive experience here. Having a place where ALL AP manufacturers are put on a level playing field.
Although your forum rules took quite a while to read, I like 'em. :D
Thanks,

This is a subject that I will follow closely. I've always had an interest in this that started with astrocam and cineroc.
What platforms are you using and what camera? Anything you would consider unusual you'd like to mention? Maybe any 35MM SLR?

Last year I had a 90 nitro. To much smoke, sold it.

A picture from it.

I still have a smaller heli to play with though.
This year I have a mast with a remote head.
http://www.envisioncreativeimaging.com/photos/344318355_guYMC-M.jpg
The remote head is also used on my mobile setup for event photography.

Both were used at this auto show. (http://www.envisioncreativeimaging.com/gallery/5608842_DKCeS)
I'm currently building a plane, and looking foward to KAP (kite) photography as well.
I do have a dSLR but currently use a Canon A640 for elevated shots.

Could the exhaust be moved aft more without disturbing the CG to prevent smoke?
Envision
08-21-2008, 05:42 PM
It doesn't matter where the exhaust is if your flying backwards for the shot. :D = Oil covered camera.
Electric is the best, Gasser and turbine next. I'm sure plenty of people will start to trickle in here.

If you noticed, the exhaust is rerouted 4" past the end of the tail blades. It doesn't help. You could be hovering and if not facing the wind the gear still gets covered. The only alternative is to front mount the camera.

Just as you posted that I noticed the exhaust pipe.

I use a Hurricane 550 on 6s lipos. Don't have the smoke issue but do have a slight vibe issue still (I know Troy been the prob forever- no time to work on it with plane/mast projects...lol) I did just pick up a new motor so hoping with the new motor and bigger blades it stables up a little as I can't find anything out of wack in the head and it runs fine w/out the camera mount...
Here's a pic of it, looks the same but more foam under camera and a downlink added (got wife excited, she can do something now :) - tilt / shutter )

Envision

Nice Troy. Is the moon on the last picture in partial eclipse? no, a 10 second shutter from the mast. Slightly over exposed moon so it shows the whole circle.
Hellsiege, Now that you've mentioned something about it flying fine without the mount, It seems like Hogster had something funny happening like that until he shortened the length of the mount legs.

I fly a Trex 600E with an Askman mount. Pan/Tilt controlled by the mrs & we use HD video + stills from a canon 40D. The ship is standard out of the box, nothing fancy added.

As a professional photographer I have found that one must capture different angles or it has already been shot :p so that's why I fly over the sea, (I'm also a slope soarer, so I'm used to flying over the sea)the landscapes here in North Devon are superb, but I must admit helicopter wrecking material, I trust my heli even if my heli doesn't trust me :D
Thanks for the comments, I am trying to get out & shoot some more video, but the WX here in the UK has been terrible, we haven't had a summer yet, so I'm grounded for now.

That's one wicked looking ship, love the colour scheme. You have a lot of foam on there, does it help much with vibration issues?
Ross

08-24-2008, 08:39 PM
Thanks, my daughter and I designed it and had it painted so the old man could see it! the foam works great for my video. I dont use that much when I fly the still cam around. It takes out my shaky thumb syndrome! it also takes up the gap since my landing gear isnt wide enough for the cam mount.
Macsgrafs
08-24-2008, 08:54 PM
That's the key in my book, make sure you can see it at altitude. Might have to try a touch more foam on mine I think, I get vibration at certain RPM.

Ross, I'm flying a Hirobo XSpec and Trex 450. Up until recently I was also flying a Hirobo Sceadu 50, that was until I entered a drag race  lol I'm also building a Cobra using Century Swiift mechs. Then theres the planks! Talk about an addiction.... I've been thinking about slinging a small camera under the TRex for fun, I've seen someone else rig one up and it seemed to work pretty good!

Hey guys,
Just checkin in here at the new forum. Here's my setup:
Fuselage GAUI Hurricane 550 stock plastic frame
long boom
metal head
530mm CF blades
Power Scorpion HK3026-1000Kv
23T pinion
68T Front gear
20T Autorotation gear
61T Rear Main gear
7s A123
Camera Askman 30L mount
Pentax Optio S10
I'm setting 4:30 on my timer and putting back 78% (or 1800mah) back into the A123 pack. My headspeed was 1850, but I've bumped up my throttle curve since I had some room to play with. My RTF weight is 7.2 lbs. I seem to like it and it flies great (sport flying) without the mount.

CS, just go for it, there views are stunning. I've always wanted to do AP/AV, especially when I used to slop soar, I used to imagine the views my glider was getting above the rugged coastline that surrounds my location, now I know. Get a nice cam but stay clear of those flycam things...they suffer with electrical interference really bad, have yet to see a good video from one.
Thats one nice looking ship you ahve there Leo, looks quite mean to be honest. Can you post a few shots for us to see what you have been snapping?

Hi Guys,
Guess I'll jump in on one more forum as well!
Here's my current rig for AP:
T-Rex 600 - stock
6S TP 5000 V2's
JR X9303
Canon A640, sometimes with the wide angle converter
Askman custom front mount
900MHz, 100mW downlink to Eyetops
I get 6:30 for flying time plus landing...anywhere up to 30-45 more seconds and I'm averaging putting back in 72-78%. Not bad, I don't think!

Hello guys, I'm getting my gear together still. I travel for a living and currently, I'm in Iraq. I've been getting ready for R/C AP for some time and all of the parts are coming together finally. I've been a Wescam Tech/Operator for a long time working in film and video. I've always wanted to do the same thing with my R/C and now it's finally being realized. I hope to add to this forum when I can and certainly get as much info as possible. Some of you may recognize me from other forums but if not, then I say greetings. I've posted a few pics in my gallery that shows where I'm headed with my gear but my avatar gives a hint. A friend sent me the link to this new forum that looks pretty darn good so far. Good luck.

LOL! Eric, I think Chica wanted a part of that blade after the crash....
Most of the ENG heli's use our smaller mounts for news. Our film and regular video cams are a bit larger, in the 36 inch diameter range. We've done everything from major feature films, spots, and documentarys to just about every sport ever broadcasted. You name it and chances are that I've been on it from shotmakers, akela cranes, boats, heli's, planes, cables, and a few other camera carrying devices. The work is awesome but I'm ready to give this a try as my current work allows more freedom. I have many contacts in the buisness AND, I understand that there is a difference between the shots the Wescam can get as opposed to the R/C version. There's a place for both, even though the shots seem similar but the execution is far apart.

Canon A640 with Adaptor for different filters. It's the same adaptor for the Wide angle lens which I also have but rarely use. I do have a dslr, but prefer to use the A640 for flight.

I can't wait to get into this.. unfortunately I have to wait for $$.. I learned to fly on a walkera 33e. LOL. Plus, Im in school right now.
I keep going between a nitro raptor 30 and a 600e of sorts.. recently found a 600 with elec power system for $380...
but nitro fly's longer.. but its loud, and messy.. but cheaper startup...:blockhead:
...I can't decide..

If you plan on doing AP then electric is the way to go. Less vibration and you wont ruin your camera with fuel residue.
