G4 is a great Sim, I started off with G2 in 2003 or 2004 (not sure) and it taught me some good flying. Now i've acquired the G4. Its simply amazing. the physics, the graphics, the models........ the list is endless.
Its great.

Do you fly "real" helis?
Can you fly other sim helis ?
If no to both of those questions ... it takes "awhile" :)
Some /most ?? sims have a "time slow down" feature which greatly helps when you're starting out, otherwise (at least to me), it seemed impossible to fly any of them either (I'm not talking about G4 ... haven't used it .. but other sims are going to to be similar.

Man if they had a time increase option - like double speed, and we could practice that way, imagine what we could do with a real heli!

The ClearView sim has an "increase time/speed" function.
...Or are you talking about an increase time/speed function for "real life" .. a.k.a. a "time machine" ? :D

I just figured out how to speed up G4 - what a trip lol!!!

yeah granted, i havent dabbled too much with helis, but i figured they wouldnt have as steep of a learning curve as they do :)
I actually dabbled a little with them this week, and managed to stay airborne for a couple of minutes before i lost total control. WAY different thinking involved than with fixed-wing aircraft.

i love G3
it's a balance between planes and helis
for G4, helis rock on G4
here's me having a little fun on G3 with the stock dominion 90 3D and logo 600 Vbar:D

So I downloaded the demo for G4 but you can only use the keyboard. Yeah, that doesn't help me at all.
At least it's better than Phoenix's think-you're-getting-a-demo-have-to-install-and-everything-but-it's-really-only-a-video.

yeah the keyboard part sucks
but oh well, atleast it's something to use

g4 is a great toy. fun to play with especially when networked to other pilots. I find however that subtle differences between the real deal and the sim make it only an adequate training aid. my biggest complaint is an almost total lack of transitional lift. Flying my real 600N from forward flight to a hover you have to add collective rather quickly else it drops like a rock when stopping. with alot of time invested on the sim I find my time at the field comes with constant "collective" reminders from my flying buds as I transition. more than once I have slammed it onto the gear because I didnt manage the collective good enough. Wind on the sim is useless. real wind is much more random and makes hovering/landing much more challenging. I would also like to be able to modify pitch/throttle curves on the sim. Anyone have a Trex700 model for g4??

I agree - what a waste! Was a decent-sized download _over 100MB if I remember right) and no user-input unctionality at all (except the click-on-what-you-wanna-watch choices)...

Having owned (and just sold) RealFlight G3.5, I can tell you that helicopter flight physics in Phoenix is far superior to RealFlight, especially in forward flight. G4 isn't any better, incidentally. I just flew it at the LHS yesterday, and Phoenix blows it away.
Sims are much like religion though. Everyone has their favorites, and none of them do you any good unless you practice. :)
To answer the original poster: Yes, it's a fairly accurate representation of the skills required. If you can't do it in the sim, you will probably not be able to do it for real either.

I would also like to be able to modify pitch/throttle curves on the sim.
The curves can be modified. I have done it and it makes it feel more like my real RC stuff. I like to flatten out the middle of the collective a bit.

Who says you can't use the joystick on th G4 demo? I do it all the time. The only bad thing is that after roughly 2 to 3 minutes a popup appears.
I also totaly disagree with the comment about the sim not being true to life compared to to the real thing.
I have owned Realflight , Realflight Deluxe, G2 and G3.5 and the time I spent practicing with the sim has paid off both financially and skill wise. I can fly precision and 3D equally well in real time and have kept crashing down to a minimum to say the least. I have also trained others who did and did not have sim time under ther belt and the difference between the two is mind blowing.
One really big help with the sim is to use you own transmitter that you fly with at the field. Set up the model on the sim to use the pass thru setting and then your able to use all of the functions, mixes and curves for a particlar model through the transmitter. After wich you can save the setting as a model and never have to retrim again. I also have my precision models setup with mixes and differential for the best setup possible just like my real birds.

Go into the Settings and turn up the Physics Speed that is pretty much your speed/time control.

For me it is a bit harder to fly on G4 than it is in real life. It does give you great practice though. Helps me a lot during the long cold winters.

I'm pretty sure that the G2 and G3 controllers will work with the G4 demo.

the best thing about the sims is the price to repair that heli when you plant it!....It will make you a better flier no matter how close to "Real" it is!!! and for us guys in the winter tundra it really increases the stick times!!!

I can't fly a sim worth a damn either. Planes or helis. I lose orientation and SMACK!! Maybe it's because I came from the generation that marveled at seeing "Pong" for the first time AFTER I became an adult. I just do not have the video gene.

I picked up G4.5 a couple of weeks ago trying to get a leg up on starting out with heli's. I'm at the point where I can hover in any orientation and can do basic flight patterns and basic flips and rolls. The biggest problem I have is with depth perception. I'm hoping that it's due to me flying on a screen and not in reality. I'm gonna spend a few more weeks at it and then I'm gonna go ahead and order a heli.

You might try the Depth of Field feature, to see if it helps you with the depth perception issue. This feature will cause objects not in the same plane as the helicopter to go slightly out of focus. There are four different levels you can try.

Can the people that have a G4.5 answer a couple of questions for me? What are the graphics and sounds on the Helis like? I have a G3.5 and really like it except for two things.
1. The graphics suck, big time. Being a PC gamer and having a fairly fast computer I'm used very detailed graphics and the G3.5 graphics are horrible for the price you pay for the program.
2. The sounds are also terrible especially with the 450 sized helis. They sound like some sort of insect flying around instead of a heli.
Are the above mentioned any better with the G4.5? I've played around with one a little at my LHS and wasn't very impressed but I'm sure their computer is an older computer with the graphics setting turned down.

I think there is something wrong with you if you don't like the G3.5 graphics. I've used every simulator out there and the graphics in G3.5 are by far the best. I have 4 high end computers that I mess around with 2 of which are fully modified for gaming. But I don't use the computers for gaming, that's what I have my PS3 for. I built the computers like that to run the simulator.
Anyway, some good news is that in G4.5 the aircraft detail has probably been doubled and the PhotoFeild flying sites have a little more resolution to them than in G3.5
The physics in 4.5 got alot better and a ton of extra sounds were added for more realism.

Real life is easier than sim. Sim is completely different.

A:g4.5 graphics are fantastic but does use a decent system to run it well
2. The sounds are also terrible especially with the 450 sized helis. They sound like some sort of insect flying around instead of a heli.
A: yes the sounds suck

A: yes and no! phoenixrc is a very good sim . areofly deluxe is ordinary . but not having used reflex im unable to comment on that.
I find realflight helis have too much power OR don't seem to bog enough.phoenix is fairly close to the real thing BUT ive found i needed to turn the physics speed up to make it more real feeling
