I don't trust any of them. They are all just rags for the advertisers. If you wan't to know what works, go to the forums.

Will they be honest about a product even if the manufacturer is buying a full page ad?

Friz...be careful what you read on forums. They aren't all as unbaised as you think. Not to mention many people may list themselves as experts, but spend way more time typing than flying. (the number of their posts is a good indication of this)
I love forums for the social aspect they provide...it's like my local field when I can't be at one!
As the saying goes....be careful what you read....no matter where you read it.
When it comes to buying a heli...talk to people you trust and buy what you like!!
I have learned who to trust and who not to on the forums. I'm not saying it's perfect either, but the people on forums very seldom have a financial incentive to lie. The mags are desperate for ad sales and almost always have an incentive to not say what they really think. Yes you can learn to read between the lines here also. Several years ago I was shopping for an electric trainer. I read an article on the Yard stick. The article said " Don't expect balistic performance from the recommended setup". Well I didn't think that I needed ballistic performance for a trainer so I bought it. It should have said " The recomended setup is not enough to sustain flight, if you wish to do so ad another cell to the pack" this is what I did and had success. I learned to how to do this from other disgruntled customers on forums not from a magazine. That was the last RC mag I bought.
BTW I have noticed that women seem to be more common on the heli sites. It is nice to have a feminine perspective. Helikyna, is there something about helis that are more appealing to the women then fixed wing?

I now what your saying, I bowhunt alot goto tournaments and all that, I even had my own archery shop, when i 1st started archery in '97 i would watch the hunting shows when they were young, they would show you how to track your game and had really good tips and showed you how to tune your bow and all that, But now all the shows and magizines are one gigantic infomercial, i got sick of watching them or reading the mags. But i really like RC Heli mag they they have some really good articles.

I read everything. Even the Euro mags. All of them have there ups and downs. My favorite is RCHelimag. They seem to market towards what the industry is younger more savy guys. You want JUNK read the fixed rags. Am I biased? YES. The guys at RChelimag are local and most are now good friends that I fly with at least once a week. What does that do for me and now you? Well I can actually tell you they test there products. I have had the chance to fly some of the featured birds. I also see that they continue to fly there featured birds long after the article has run. You think about the small staff and the amount of helo's being tested every month the dead lines the late arriving products. I have seen first hand the late night builds, flying under the lights literally anything it takes to make sure those words written are as true to life as possible. I also read a ton of info on the web.. I am what my wife calls an info WHORE. I simply can not "Feed my addiction enough"

I read RCHeli mag, and I love it. I do probably spend more time reading on forums though. I do like the idea of a magazine because sometimes I am just more in the mood to physically flip through the pages.
Where do you buy Rotory Modeler?

Friz,
I do understand that magazines are slanted to their advertisers, although it does seem that there is less brown-nosing now than in previous years (I think that the internet has kept more authors honest than when there was not a free wide spread medium to dispute what they printed).
I don't so much read the mags for buying advise, but to keep up with whats happening and whats new than anything. Also like jolio55 said, I just like to have the physical magazine to read to kill time when I dont have computer/ipod around.

I'm actually a planker at heart. I used to work for Aero-Model, which is the US distributor for Hacker Motors and the former distributor for Mikado Helicopters. That was my introduction to this hobby. So, we had an old SloStick lying around the shop that my boss was kind enough to donate to me "if" I would build it. So, I did and he supplied all the electronics. I was fortunate enough to have access to some of the best pilots in the "planker world", Chip Hyde, Jason Shulman, Andrew Jesky and Mark Leseberg all assisted me with my first few flights.
Years later...I was offered a position with Align. I love my job, heli events and all of the heli people! So, although I'm much more involved in the heli world these days, I'm still just a planker!

I'll agree with that and add that they have a lot more technical type articles than the other mags I've seen. Which is a bonus too.

ya know... when RC Sport Flyer came out on the shelves, they had more helicopter articles. lately its been swamped with soaring articles. still their information is the MOST technical and scientific of any magazine. its very interesting reading...airfoils and servo current draws and all sorts of information that is most useful. i have to give them a thumbs up for publishing information that is MUCH MUCH MORE than just glory review of the aircraft advertised on the next page.
RC REPORT does a good job on reviews. very objective. i read their articles, but none of it is heli related.
Radio Control Helicopter hasn't been mentioned, and somebody can smack me for doing it. that magazine sucks.

RC Heli here as well - Love the product reviews and how they don't just cram it in two to three pages. It's laid out and then flight report usually follows..it's my first year with the mag but looks to be some good info you can rely upon.

Cool story. I too found my vocation in my hobby, amature built aircraft (full scale). I have worked for RANS Designs (kit manufacturer) for 10 Yrs. I have to say that the lure of RC aircraft has been addictive. I wish I had your teachers. I am mostly self taught. I am going to my first "Bro" event in a couple of weeks. I have a Mojo 40 on the build board and a saito 72 ready to bolt on. My only exposure to high alpha flight so far has been a H9 twist w/ a ST45. Not the favorite airplane in the "planker world" I wish you great success with your job. It's hard to call it work when you love what you do.
BTW I'm ordering a 450 SE a couple of weeks. Hope you reap some benefit.
