Where do most heli pilots fly? Your front yard? A heli only ama club? A mostly planker ama club? Behind uncal joe's barn? If you fly at a planker club field how well dose heli's and airplanes mix? Any issues with sharing space and what could an airplane club do to make heli pilots more welcomed and give them the space they need.

Thanks,

I fly at a school close to the house. The local AMA fields are not very friendly towards helicopters. You can fly there but in the dirt parking lot NOT on the 800' paved runway.. There is a club in Norco that is seeing the trend of helo's and seeing the poteintal for an increase in membership ($$$$) they have approached me to install a seperate area for Helo's along with three concrete pads. In O.C. that club has a sperate area for helo's but its only one flight station. In Riverside there is a club that is super Helo fiendly but they are even talking about a seperate area away from the shaded pits and cramped in the corner to fly helo's. I visit all of them but stay at the school where its just me and a couple buddies burning fuel.. The club with the 800' runway there membership is inthe tank down almost 25% from a year ago. I guess if I wait long enough they will all die and the helo guys can take over..

I fly micro heli's in my loft in the Lynn MA, Ghetto. It is a lovely apartment with 20' ceilings, but unfortunately the city hasn't delivered on what it promised for the neighborhood. That said there is a huge parking lot behind my building and since it is the Ghetto it is almost completely empty after 5 PM and on weekends so I fly there. Wind is an issue sometimes since I am about 5 blocks from the Ocean, but I get by. If anyone knows of a good official flying field in or near Massachusetts Let me know.

Hi,

Where I fly helis (Logo 500 3D / Trex450 SE):

- At parks around my work area with friends during lunch time. We have 2 available parks.
- At home, I live in the mountains (Alps) and there is plenty of free space in front of our house to fly (mainly after work, in the evening).
- At the field, sometime during the weekends. 20 minutes from home.

There is a large empty field just a block from my house. Since I'm still a major noob, (can barely do forward flight, BARELY), most of my flying has been hovering in my back yard.

You my friend, are a genius.

For some reason, i never thought to bring it with me. This probably saved my marriage. I hate going "shopping" so I'll haul my heli with me. :D

Wow, the 'going shopping' routine is awesome :)

Currently I just fly in the yard (.33 acre) but it's just not big enough for me to learn FF - trees get way too close, way too quickly...

I fly at the school just down the street from my house. They have a nice track/practice football field that is perfect. That is, unless there are people out there walking on the track, then I tend to wait until they leave. If I'm at my folks house, there's about a 2 acre area that's perfect for flying just about anything. There are fields on both sides, so it's pretty much limitless.

Burning fuel with GMoney at the school, plus I have to fly every where it is my job. Beach, mountains, canyons, parks, over water... you name it I have flown there, or at least will probably fly there at one point.

I fly in my front yard, in the parking lot where I work, the baseball field of the High School in the town that I work, at the city ball fields a block away from my house. Of course in my house for the 4#3.

Back yard and a nearby municipal baseball field. Oh, and occasionally the parking lot at work.

The dedicated flying fields (somehow the AMA got Valley Forge park to reserve a field for their use and ban RC flight everywhere else in the park... quite a racket) are pretty much retired guys flying planes, no helis welcome.

I think this forum is too specialised to americans, like ama, i don't know the first bit about what ama do and stuff, i am a member of the BMFA (British Model Flying Association)

About 3 acre field 2 or 3 minutes from my house. The campus uses it as a experimental field for crop growing, lack of better words..
Have permission and everything, pretty sweet deal. Nearest club is 100 miles away.

I have flown in my driveway, and in my back yard. I really need to go to a school or something, and I don't yet have AMA coverage. Anyone know of heli-friendly clubs in CT?

The AMA is the american equivalent of the BMFA. Check out www.modelaircraft.org for more info.

I fly my FPs in the house. I fly everything in the driveway, backyard and when I get motivated at the school down the road. When I visit my buddy in Shenandoah, I fly on 8 acres of cleared land that serves as his front yard. Wish I had 8 acres of cleared land as MY front yard!

Airplane AMA club and school fields for me. usually i take my 450 out to the school fields along with my electric planks, but i usually throw it in the car when i head to the flying field anyway. it gets to be kinda fun when its right before sundown and there are only 3 or 4 guys there who are messing around

Hey, I'm American and was once a member of the AMA and I honestly don't know what they do either!
Besides put out a middle of the road magazine and provide insurance. In the U.S. though, you've almost got to have AMA membership to belong to a club. Gas cost too much for me to drive to club fields anymore, so I don't belong to any and don't need AMA.

vanepico

The british one is good, if your flying privileges are being risked at a common or something they will help you to defend it, and they provide insurance and a little magazine every 2 months. i think they only say you need membership to them cause they are one of the only people who do it and you need insurance to fly safely

I fly at my house because I am to embarrassed to show up at the field, but the good guys in north San Diego county go to the Vista courthouse off of Melrose Dr. No AMA or club, just a bunch of nice people.
