Why not buy or order one from the LHS to help keep them afloat?

Unfortunately, there's a lot of us without a LHS. The closest place to me with a reasonable selection of heli stuff is about an 80 mile drive - each way. I actually order from that shop anyway, as he gives me free shipping and great service (frequently 24 hour turnaround on shipped parts), but technically it's mail-order.

That sucks. Well, consider them as your LHS. Better then nothing!! I'm about 40 miles from mine, but I work 5 miles away from it. I used to work at that hobbyshop. Awesome shop. It has a very large selection of helis, planes, cars, and boats. Awesome inventory. I know people who drive 150 miles to get there.

I'll drive to the shop occasionally, but I think most of his business is mail-order, so he's generally not open on weekends. He's opened up on a Saturday a few times for us when we arranged the trip in advance. Generally, I just can't justify the $20 in gas for the round trip when he'd ship it to me for free, and I'd have it in a day or two tops.

I worked in a hobbyshop for years when I was in school, in fact that supported my addiction to helis. We used to get pretty upset at people that ordered from Tower to save a few bucks, and of course we made the argument, "what are you going to do when we go out of business and you need a new prop to fly today?" The unfortunate truth is that there are many locales that just don't have a sufficient population to support a real hobbyshop, let alone one with a good selection of heli kits and parts. For people that live in those places, mail-order has actually made the hobby accessible.

Flashback!!! Haha, when you mentioned the TowerHobbies arguments, I laughed. I've had those same exact arguments with the customers too. Yes, I consider myself very lucky to have the hobby shop nearby. The cool thing is that everyone who works there, really knows their stuff. What cracks me up is that when I stopped working there, people where calling me for months for advice and "Why don't you work here anymore" questions. I kinda miss working there, but not the days that I was stuck working, while it was beautyful flying weather outside. When I go there nowadays, I still get behind the counters and help customers and myself out. 2 months ago, I sold a Trex 600N and all the fixin's to a new customer at the store. I was just there to pick up some nitro. The guy did'nt even realize that I did'nt work there.

I have to agree, I miss having local experts to chat with, and being able to actually hold something in my hand and analyze it's design before plunking down my money for it. Frankly, that's one of my main attractions to the forums - to get some beta on new products before making a purchase. If I had an LHS, I would definitely use choose it over mail-order.
