Helicopter trick...
Heres an interesting tid-bit about how the crack roll got its name. (From Toro)
Matt Botos who is a great pilot was doing a move that involved a backwards inverted circle at high speed (hurricane) and shaking the sticks very fast. It initially was called the VCR (short for VIBRATING C**K RING.) This wouldnt fly in the PC world of RC so Krause thought of the term Crackin' like you were shaking and jonesing for more crack. As people started to do it backwards and rolling it was brought to the name crack roll.
Thats how crack roll got its name!!

Excellent +1. I thought I was one of the few that had the whole historical knowledge on that :) Everyone seems to think it's an ASJ only thing.
Just as a point, I do crack maneuvers for my first two flights every day without even trying. It's not a pro only move ;)

It's a awesome sounding move. And the pros seem to make it look like there helis are in really high heat (heatwaves!)
I've tried it but my 450 just doesn't have the disk size for a proper crack move.

That's the closest rendition of that story I have ever heard!! Botos was the originator of the VCR ( I'll give you the full details on that story at the next event), more commonly known as "crackin". He came down to the Phoenix Fun Fly a couple years back and started shaking (not just the sticks, his whole body shakes) and we all thought his helicopter was about to blow up!! Once we realized he was doing it on purpose, the first thing out of our mouths was...HOW DID YOU DO THAT?!?
Now...everyone is crackin, even ASJ...

Can't take the credit. Toro dropped the knowledge like KRS1, I just retained it.

There's some 'crack' moves at about 0:55 and he really gets doped up at 4:00 with a crack piro flip and funnel - you can't really see it on the video, but you can hear it.

He does some more crack moves like that at 6:18. The only way you are able to do crack maneuvers and most of the other things he does in the video is to have all the servos be ultra high speed. I have a JR S8900G servo on the tail of my 600 and it has a speed of .05 sec @ 4.8v That servo can literally move as fast as the transmitter stick jiggles when you let go of it.

I would think maybe you want to run 6V on the servos to get all doped up like that... I'm gonna keep saying it till it catches on :)
There's a new special receiver from Spektrum designed for the purpose of running cyclics on 6V and other stuff on 4.8... if I get a bigger heli I might try it.

That's the AR7100 receiver. I would have bought it for my T-Rex 600N but I thought it was something else and bought the regular old AR7000 instead. The next time I went to the store, it caught my eye again and I couldn't believe I didn't take a closer look the time before. There is also the version of it that also has RevLimit built in. Its kind of like an engine governor but won't increase throttle and only limit it to a max rpm. Its only good for nitro helis though.
Actually the AR7100 uses a 7.4v 2cell Li-Po for power and they call it an 8v setup cause when the battery is fully charged, its at around 8.4v
And guys like Alan Szabo are running those high speed servos on higher voltage setups so they can get the most performance out of the heli until a newer, better servo or whatever comes along. The reason for the step down to 4.8v is because gyros only work at 4.8v Though I have seen guys that have the rudder servo power bypassed to 6v with the gyro still running on 4.8

This is why I"m not that active on CR anymore. I started to be when it first opened up. But there are WAY to many people just posting to post. I don't understand why so many people try and get into this hobby if they just can't afford it. :blockhead: Although a clever marketing strategy......you can never "get" everyone. :)

Freddie Fred 90% of your posts are nothing but the word 'cool'. You have a few other posts of substance, but doing what you are dong is just going to take you out of the running for any prize. You are creating the opposite effect of what you are trying to accomplish.
Besides this site is for people to share their ideas and experience so we can all have fun and learn something, not clog up threads with mindless 1 word posts.

With my 450's, to get the helicopter to shake good takes super stiff dampeners. I also use leading edge control on the blade grips.

can i ask why LE control?
is it better?
Beauberry
10-15-2008, 10:56 PM
LE control is not better, just a little snappier for getting your "dope" on. With strong servo's like the HS65MG you can also put the links out farther on the arms for a little quicker movement. Just don't let the lower servo arm hit the main gear. The linkages can break when pushing it hard. I have been working on seeing if larger Dubro ball ends can be made to work.

so a good heli setup can make crispy crack rolls. it's starting to sound like I'd rather eat it than fly it.

If he was flying two mistakes high then he must have some pretty quick reflexes. lol
No wonder he was shaking so bad.

Ohh, I didn't realize just how far you have to vibrate the stick to get the "crack" effect. He's almost going full deflection in both directions with the stick. I'll have to try it that way on the sim.
I saw a guy training for a competition back in January and he did a crack maneuver as part of his routine. The sound in the videos of the crack effect does no justice to what it sounds like in real life. You can actually feel the vibration going through you.
